Background & History

"Opportunity provided to these youth... has the capicity to affect ones economic, social and cultural life through choice, and has a profound effect on individual's quality of life"

In 1993 the Wunan Regional Council and their chairperson, Mr. Ian Trust, had a vision for Indigenous youth of the Kimberley. Using CDEP (Community Development Employment Program) Funds they could enhance training and employment opportunities in the Kimberley. The Council recognised that greater access to quality training would open sustainable employment opportunities for the future. On the 1st June 1997 Kimberley Group Training Company as it was then known, was born. Kimberley Group Training Incorporated (KGT) now operates as an independent, community based, non-profit organisation, administered by a Committee and supported by the Department of Education and Training and the Commonwealth Department of Employment Education and Workplace Relations.

The vision of the organisation was to optimise opportunities for unemployed people, both Indigenous, non-indigenous and disadvantaged groups, by providing training and employment opportunities in the Kimberley. The opportunity provided to these youth to become self determining has the capacity to affect ones economic, social and cultural life through choice and has a profound effect on individual’s quality of life. KGT has continued this ethos and its vision is to be a quality organisation, leading the way in employment and training in the Kimberley.

The organisation currently employs 296 apprentices, 72% (215) are indigenous, less than 5% of Indigenous participants are now employed on CDEP.  These figures clearly indicate that KGT is one of the largest employers of Indigenous youth in the Kimberley.   Kimberley Group Training has expanded its service into the West Kimberley and now has offices in Broome, Kununurra and Halls Creek. The development of partnerships and the use of innovative programs such as the New Apprenticeship Access Programs (NAAP) are supporting people at risk, many of whom go on to start and complete apprenticeships with KGT.
